Guilin unlike the biggers cities, has a relaxed atmosphere in the city centre, especially in the night markets. There is a main shopping area on Zhengyang Pedestrian Street with lots of shops, stalls and street food, but the market around Xichenglu Pedestrian Street and the small alleyways off it are much more decorative and photogenic. It comes alive around 7pm and you can kick off with a Starbucks at the entrance to the market area.

Costumes. Everywhere we visited there were costume hire shops and an endless line of (mainly) young women dressing up and getting photographed. As usual, no-one seemed to mind the extra camera pointing at them.
