It was meant to be Yu Garden, a classical garden in Shanghai old town dating back to the Ming Dynasty, but it was raining, torrentially. The light was awful. With a half-day left in Shanghai before heading inland, the time was spent in the mainly-covered and often indoors market area – the Yuyuan Bazaar. Not a bad thing – I bought some high-quality low-cost tourist tat, had some interesting market food, and cranked up the ISO on the Canon 6D and took some photos.

Clearly raining. The 6D is weather sealed – I however am not, and I was wearing shorts and trainers, keen to avoid trenchfoot. I was standing covered as much as possible and holding an umbrella while holding the rather heavy 6D.

There’s plenty of food options – high end, street vendors, and the classic Asian food court.

Oh, the dumplings!

And there were shops and there were people.

The rain did ease off a wee bit – which allowed a few shots out in the open of the water garden outside the main Gardens entrance and then outside in the surrounding streets.

Ideally – good weather, no jetlag, no Disney theme park hangover, no evening train journey – this would have been a great day for garden photography in colour and then some evening photography with the bazaar fully lit up. Instead it was wet, dull and suitable for black and white. That’s travel photography for you.
